Live Difference

Developing spatial interventions to encourage interaction between people of difference in an era of diversity

This Live Project follows on from a programme by Live Difference, a research group at the University of Sheffield, who have been investigating how we can 'develop or improve the capacity of people to live and interact across difference'.  Whilst we live in increasingly diverse cities, surrounded by people of differing ability, sexuality, ethnicity, nationality, class and gender, many of us remain surrounded by those who are similar to us.

Their research has looked at 'meaningful contact' - contact which 'actually changes values and translates…into a more positive respect for others' - and how this can be created.  Our brief is to translate this research into a series of spatial experiments that will help to identify the types of activity and characteristics of particular spaces where this type of contact can be facilitated.

We will be working in collaboration with Together for Peace, a Leeds-based NGO, whose work involves bringing people of difference together.
